Horowitz, who years ago wrote a masterful book about Claudio Arrau, here gives us a collection of essays on the state of music in contemporary society. He flies all over the map, dealing with the music of Mahler in relation to the artworks of Klimt, the erratic career of Vladimir Horowitz [no relation to the author] (his sabbaticals that made him "deeper" when he returned are largely myths, the author says, and I tend to agree), the changing place of classical music in American life, the teaching role of Leonard Bernstein (the more original he tried to be, the less credible he was), the eccentric control-mania of Glenn Gould, and even the influence of the movie Amadeus. Throughout, Horowitz's observations are sharp, his writing crisp. As with his book on Toscanini, the author reexamines what we've taken for granted, seeing the old with fresh eyes. It's clear Horowitz never stops thinking about music anymore than he stops listening to it. After reading this book, you'll view some musical icons in a new way.
Although packed with lots of interesting material, this is a short read, and an easy one. There's no musical notation or technical jargon to intimidate.
