Fighting for Time: The Image of War, 1861-1865, Vol. 4 (Images of War - 1861-1865 , Vol 4) Review
When this volume 4 was published the year was 1983. Three other volumes had been published to good acclaim with two additional volumes yet to come. This project by the National Historical Society (publishers of many magazines including Civil War Times Illustrated and later Civil War Times) was long in the making and estimated to cost $1,000,000 when finished. Each volume would contain several hundred of black and white photographs from the Civil War period with approximately one half never seeing print before. Each chapter of photographs would also be accompanied with an essay or article by a prominent historian of that period.

The photographs were printed on good stock paper, with sewn pages, and buckram bindings. All publisher bindings were of black and the six volumes matched. Even after 30 years these volumes are very striking, as I hold mine in hand it is difficult to believe a generation has passed. Amazing, and these 6 volumes are also amazing.
All 6 are still available to the interested party through Amazon dealers, in this 150th anniversary year of the American Civil War.
