Thirty-Six Views of the Eiffel Tower: A Turn-of-the-Century Tribute to the City of Light Review... as seen from the Eiffel Tower! Or is it the other way around? Whichever way you peer, or travel, this is a lavishly printed replica of the 1902 treasure "Les Trente-six Vues de la Tour Eiffel" by the print artist Henri Rivière. Blending the aesthetics and the craftsmanship of Japanese block prints with the whimsical delicacy of French art nouveau, Rivière paid the highest compliment of imitation to the great Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1841), who was in turn among the first Japanese artists to incorporate European influences, especially in perspective, into his popular prints. His masterpiece Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjuurokkei) was published circa 1831-34. Just as Hokusai's prints catalogue the landscapes and urban scenes of Fuji and Edo, always with the conical peak somewhere in the image near or far, Rivière's prints capture the 'City of Light' in vivid intimacy - parks, mansions, markets, barges, churches, construction sites - always with the iconic Eiffel Tower peeking over. Derivative it is, but Rivière's skill and affection for his city make this a wonderfully pleasurable book to hold and look through. This is truly the Paris of one imagination. The book is of the highest quality in printing and binding, the sort of book that would make a charming gift. The original French introduction, in elegant monastic calligraphy, is reprinted with the views. A translation of that introduction to English and a brief essay on the artist and on the vogue of japonisme among the Impressionists complete the text.Thirty-Six Views of the Eiffel Tower: A Turn-of-the-Century Tribute to the City of Light OverviewThirty-Six Views of the Eiffel Tower is an eminently giftable tribute to the greatest sight in the City of Light. A gorgeous re-creation of Henri Rivire's original 1902 volume offers a stunning view of turn-of-the-century Paris. Sometimes looming in the foreground, sometimes a tiny detail on the horizon, the tower is always present: piercing the sky above a teeming street scene; populated with daring construction workers far above the earth; and peacefully distant above a tranquil Seine. Published in association with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, this enchanting collection is sure to be cherished by Francophiles the world over.
