Gators of Neptune: Naval Amphibious Planning for the Normandy Invasion ReviewGators of Nepture provides a look at the background, conception, planning, organization, and execution of the D-Day landings. It actually treats the subject on several levels.
To begin with, there is a comprehensive examination of the technical and logistical aspects of the operation, which remains the most complex landing ever undertaken. So we learn a great deal about the supply of landing craft, arrangements for naval escorts and gunfire support, the intricate planning necessary to mesh operations by naval, air, and ground forces, and more, including lots on training (with a good concise discussion of Slapton Sands).
But Yung, a seasoned naval analyst, didn't stop there. He frames the tale by examining the evolution of both British and American amphibious doctrine, which differed in important ways, requiring complex negotiation among the commanders and their staffs to hammer out a common doctrine. In dealing with this aspect of the planning, we are treated to some critical portraits of many of the leading figures on both sides. This is in many ways the most valuable part of the book. By looking at the planning for D-Day through the experiences, personalities, ambitions, and inter-relationships of the principal commanders - Bertram Ramsay, Andrew Cunningham, Harold Stark, Philip Vian, Alan Kirk, and others - Yung turns what could easily have been a very dry, even boring technical account of operational planning and logistical management into a very readable work.

Battle for Europe: How the Duke of Marlborough Masterminded the Defeat of the French at Blenheim ReviewI had noticed this book while picking through works on the War of Spanish Succession here on amazon and I placed it on my Christmas list. I was surprised to open it and began reading it on Christmas day and couldn't put it down. I finished it the next day after reading through the night.
Spencer pens an amazing book that is said to concern the 1704 Battle of Blenheim in Bavaria. Instead, the book deals with a period of history of approximately 1670-1705, the time in world history where empires were rising and falling and what could be termed as the "calm between the storms" of the Reformation and Enlightenment. Spencer weaves and intricate and flowing tale of the great clash of arms between the marshalls of Louis XIV and the Duke of Marlborough, backing the narrative of the war and the battle with political intrigues, explanations of 18th century warfare, and a look at the three major characters of the book, the Duke, Louis XIV, and Prince Eugene of Savoy.

The September Girls ReviewThe September Girls starts on a chilly night in 1920 when two babies are born: one to a poor Irish family just arrived in Liverpool, and the second to a privileged family of money in the same town--in fact, in the very same house. Cara, the Irish child, grows up in a home filled with love and family though never rich, while Sybil, the monied child, grows up with an overly doting father and a mother who finally leaves them to forge her own life. Though very different, the girls' lives are entertwined through the circumstances of their births and the friendship of their mothers, leading them on different paths that will ultimately converge again.
This is a wonderful tale that pulls you in the moment you read the first page. Brenna and Eleanor, the mothers in this story, bond over their children and we follow them and their daughters over the course of 20+ years, through marriages that crumble, children who disappoint, and lives that are changed irreparably when the bombs begin to fall on Liverpool in 1940. Each of the characters, from Nancy the stalwart housekeeper to Marcus the stand-offish businessman, creep slowly into your heart as you read about the adventures of life in Liverpool as seen through their eyes. Cara and Sybil take us far away as both join the military when Britain enters World War 2, and both experience devastating affairs of the heart that bring them closer together and then tear them apart once again.
There are a few moments when things are tied up nicely that I would have liked a bit more information about, but this novel is so well-crafted and the characters so honest and believable that that is only a mild consideration. Full of life and the curves it throws us, this story will stay with me a very, very long time. I will definitely be looking for more from this superb author, and I encourage you to do the same. Queen of the Mersey ReviewQueen of the Mersey is a family saga revolving around the friendship between Queenie, Laura and Vera three Liverpool women and their children Mary and Hester. The story opens up on the brink of WWII where Laura is living with her boyfriend and their illegitimate daughter Hester. She meets Vera a motherly housewife and they establish a friendship.
In the flat above Laura a drunk abusive woman lives with her daughter Queenie. One day the drunk leaves with a rich pimp abandoning 14 year old Queenie. Laura takes in Queenie and they become friends. After Laura's husband Roddy joins up, Laura and Vera send their daughter with Queenie to be evacuated in Wales. They live in a house that once was an old school. After a tragic incident which changes Queenie's life forever they return to Liverpool trying to forget.
Overall, this was a great story. I particularly liked the discussion of WWII and the events surrounding the war. My favorite characters were Queenie and Hester. I didn't care for Mary who seemed selfish until later on in the story.
I lost interest when the author began to age up the characters rapidly. Particularly didn't care about 60's Liverpool and Mary with her adult kids, or Queenie's affair. I preferred the wartime events. It seemed to me, too, that the gals were wasting their lives on undeserving men. The men seemed utterly weak.
Oh, and I haven't a clue what the pic is about on the cover. It just didn't seem to represent any event from the story, unless the generic kids were meant to be the heroines as children on the beach in wales.Queen of the Mersey OverviewIt is Liverpool, 1939.The Second World War is about to start when pretty Laura Oliver meets Queenie Todd.Laura is twenty-one and happily married to dashing Roddy.Plain, inadequate Queenie is only fourteen and has been deserted by her goodtime mother.The two become friends, along with big-hearted Vera Monoghan across the street.When the air raids begin the older women trust Queenie sufficiently to put their small daughters, Hester and Mary, into her care and the three young people are evacuated to Caerdovey, a small town on the coast of Wales.At first it is a haven of peace and quiet.The girls have a wonderful time and then something happens, so terrifying that it will haunt them for the rest of their lives. This unputdownable story tells of great friendships and terrible betrayals.Maureen Lee has written a novel full of the warmth and perception we have come to expect from her.

Mother of Pearl ReviewAmy Curran was just 18, pretty as a picture and totally unworldly, when she met the love of her life, Barney Patterson, on the pier at Southport. It was a classic case of love at first sight and, within weeks, they had eloped, without a thought for anyone else. Barney's family was educated and wealthy, with a slightly unhinged mother whose hatred of Catholics was an obsession. Amy's family was very much working class with all of its members Catholics and with nothing in common with the Patterson's. When WW2 was declared, Barney immediately enlisted at Officer Training School and was sent to France where he was captured by the Germans and held in a prisoner of war camp until the end of the war. When he returned home, he was a completely different man from the cheerful boy who had married Amy. His attitude to Amy became more and more aggressive, ending with his accidental killing. Amy is sentenced to 20 years jail, so her daughter, Pearl is raised by Amy's brother and his wife, believing that her mother had deserted her and left the country.
