Yes/No Design: Discover Your Decorating Style With Taste-Revealing Exercises and Examples ReviewBefore reading Yes/No Design, I never really thought about my personal taste in decorating, nor did I bother to explore my own creativity. When I found myself with the task of decorating my living room, I felt completely overwhelmed. I had read tons of magazines and asked for the opinions of my friends, as well the opinions of their interior designers. Once I read Diane Love's book, I found myself wondering what was it that I liked when it came to color? Furniture? Fabrics? I had no idea. The exercises in Yes/No design truly helped me, for the first time, locate my own imagination and style. I realized that lemon was going to be the color of my living room, and not yellow. I realized that an airy room was what I wanted, instead of a darker, stuffier one. Yes/ No helped me organize my thoughts, and in the end, helped me to decorate my home in only one way, mine!Yes/No Design: Discover Your Decorating Style With Taste-Revealing Exercises and Examples OverviewAcclaimed designer and artist Diane Love shows you how, in this beautifully photographed volume, to discover and define your personal taste, then demonstrates how to build a decor that is functional, aesthetically pleasing, and truly reflective of your personality. Within the pages of this beautifully photographed book, acclaimed designer and artist Diane Love presents a truly innovative approach to interior design by equipping you with an understanding of your unique taste and the ability to use it to create your personal decorating style. Through easy, fully illustrated, step-by-step exercises and examples, she helps you to discover and define your taste, then demonstrates how you can use this knowledge to create a functional and aesthetic decor that is a true reflection of your personality. PART I: WHAT IS YOUR TASTE? Seven exercises, comprised of simple activities and questions, and free of self-conscious personal evaluation, help you to better define and articulate your taste. The exercises begin by asking you to select from magazines rooms that you love (your YESs) and those you don't (your NOs), then they help you to find words to express your impressions about a room's decoration, to distinguish the common denominators always present in the rooms you choose, and to pinpoint your likes and dislikes through your reactions to elements of a room's design, from architectural elements to furnishings to the color palette. PART II: EXERCISE YOUR TASTE Eleven methods taken in sequence explain the step-by-step process of decorating a room and show you how to incorporate what you have learned about your taste in Part I in order to create a decor that is comfortable and aesthetically pleasing to you. Topics covered include: using space efficiently, evaluating architectural elements, renovating economically, making a furniture plan, achieving visual balance, arranging objects and pictures, choosing lighting, and working with mirrors. QUESTIONNAIRE AND WORKBOOKS A questionnaire specially conceived to assist you in analyzing your decorating style enables you to track your aesthetic attitudes, reactions, and preferences. The two workbooks-one of which is separate from the book and easily portable.

Havana la Habana ReviewExcellent book on Havana's architecture from Colonial times to the present. It is a very well structured book with a camera eye that gets deeply into the soul of the city.
This book takes us to a living tour of Havana's dwellings from "Palaces to Huts" showing through beautiful and insightful details the diversity of styles that characterizes the organized anarchy of this city.
La Habana captures the ingenuity, creativity and diversity of the cuban mind in the instance of a building. It also shows how this creative mind has been shut down by the experiments on communism.Havana la Habana Overview

Allegra Hicks: An Eye for Design ReviewI have to admit I was drawn to this book because of the cover. It was just so darn pretty. I tend to be drawn to geometric prints in home, art and fashion. This book definitely has it's share of geometry, but what I actually enjoyed best were the snippets she wrote on her design process. Allegra considered such topics as memory, gardens, complementaries, texture, multiplicity, water, India, contrast, composition, energy and eclecticism while creating her designs. It was rather inspirational to read about her process and now I plan on exploring these topics myself through photography. I'm going to use these topics as springboards for my own designs. It will be fun to see what emerges!Allegra Hicks: An Eye for Design OverviewAllegra Hicks: An Eye for Design examines textile, interior, and fashion designer Allegra Hicks' approach to design and luxury. The book retraces the genesis of her patterns over the past decades of her work. Season by season, Hicks presents her original textile and pattern designs alongside beautiful photography of interiors, landscapes, and unexpected points of nature. Essays on design, color, and seasonal elements will inspire readers to look at interiors and fabrics in a new and different way. Pairing original textile and pattern designs with inspiring photography of interiors and landscapes, the book is an internal voyage through Allegra Hicks' mind. Praise for Allegra Hicks: An Eye for Design:"Porn for fabric fanatics." --House Beautiful

Jean-Michel Frank (Memoirs) ReviewThis is a review of the 2004 hardcover edition of the 1999 English translation, part of the Memories of Design collection by Assouline Publishing. Jean-Michel Frank, born 1895, was a true genius of 20th century decorative arts, designing furniture and interiors for the most chic and affluent clientele of his day. In addition, he often collaborated with equally talent artisans, sculptors Alberto and Diego Giacometti, decorator and cabinet maker Adolphe Chanaux, and Cuban-born architect Emilio Terry, among others. Despite his great successes creating interiors for wealthy art patrons such as Marie-Laurie and Charles de Noailles in Paris, and Nelson Rockefeller in New York City, the artist lept to his death from a window in NYC in 1941. Although this book is not as comprehensive as some others on this great designer, it is good reference for the price.Jean-Michel Frank (Memoirs) Overview

Chairs ReviewIf you think of chairs as sculptures that you can sit on in space, practical masterpieces of art for your home, you're going to love this book. Chairs never looked better or sexier. There a big color photo devoted to the important chair styles through history with a page of text on each one. I'd like to frame some of the pages of the chairs from this book and do a salon wall of interesting chairs for art work for my home. The pictures are gorgeous.
I love all of Judith Miller's other books on interior design history, and was particularly enchanted by this book. If you're a chair-lover as most of us who love interior design can't help but be, you will fall in love with this book of 400 photos of chairs. It's a great book to have on the coffee table for you and guests to enjoy as chairs are sublimely fascinating. As Mies van der Rohe said about chairs: "A chair is a very difficult object. A skyscraper is almost easier. That is why Chippendale is famous."Chairs OverviewJudith Miller celebrates and scrutinizes nearly 400 years of great seating in this sumptuous volume, an ode to the ingenuity of design, craftsmanship and sheer wow factor of the chair. Ranging from early antiques such as the 1680 Wainscot Chair and the 1740 Louis XV Chaise Lounge, to modern day collectibles such as Marc Newson's 1988 Embryo and Tom Dixon's 2007 Wingback, here are over 100 breathtaking chairs, all photographed on location. This lavish celebration of Chairs offers design aficionados and furniture lovers both authoritative text and 400 stunning photographs .In this beautifully designed volume, the chair really is the hero.

The New French Decor: Living with Timeless Objects ReviewI just purchased this book as a gift for myself for Christmas. I would say that it is not for everyone who loves to decorate with French style. For some it may be "too cluttery" as it is how to do the current new design style of "assembling many disparate objects" to create a display where you have to study the whole and then its many parts to understand the composition. The book is basically photographs with short descriptions of the photo. There really is no text to the book discussing decorating techniques, etc. I would have liked to see more text to explain the details of the photos. There is no French elegance "candy" here - no gilded rooms with Louis chairs - but mostly items that you would find in flea markets in France or even things taken from trash bins. What the book does do is make you think about the vignettes you create in your own home with a different "eye". It also makes you want to take the first plane to France to scour the flea markets for unique items. I loved LaLandes book published last year better than this one on 18th Century style but they are really an extension of each other in describing this style of decor. I would say that this book helped educate my eye and provided many hours of enjoyment studying each photo. I paid full price because I was anxious to see it, but I would say that getting it at a discount would make it a great addition to your library if you truly love all things French. I find myself pulling it off the shelf to review time and time again. I'm glad I purchased the book. The New French Decor: Living with Timeless Objects OverviewThe art of setting, compiling, or combining disparate objects is a difficult art. Yet it has become the chic new decorating style in France, and is now spreading throughout the world. After the success of The New Eighteenth-Century Style, journalist Michèle Lalande and photographer Gilles Trillard team up once again to showcase the most successful combinations of treasured heirlooms and contemporary design. From precious mundane objects like seashells and glass bottles to priceless works of master craftsmanship like candelabras and carved wooden chests, The New French Décor provides insight into the blend of sophistication, symmetry, confusion, and minimalism that makes each of these rooms successful. Beautifully photographed by Trillard, these rich designs, conceived and executed by top stylists, decorators, and antiquarians, delight the eye on each page with a brilliant patchwork of old and new.

Learning to See: Bringing the World Around You Into Your Home ReviewThis book isn't just another decorating book; it has a strong point of view-that of a design expert, Mr. Wolf-and that's why I like it so much. True, his interior design work tends to be more contemporary than traditional and his color palette is definitely subtle, but the book is packed with helpful tips and information for everyone who is interested in design and in putting together a home that is both chic and inviting. Unless you are looking for layers of chintz and lots of ruffles, you, too, can be inspired by Wolf's eclectic take on decorating and his deft mix of antiques and modern pieces. Plus, this book is a must-read for all who think they might like to become an interior designer, as Mr. Wolf describes his own career path-arriving in the States from Cuba as a teenager and making his way into the design world with a few quirky twists and turns.
Vicente Wolf's text is engaging, his photos are terrific, and his rooms are compelling. I loved the book so much, I bought several to give as presents.Learning to See: Bringing the World Around You Into Your Home OverviewAcclaimed as one to the country's top one hundred interior designers by both Metropolitan Home and Architectural Digest, Vicente Wolf is the uncontested master of cool, luminous rooms that combine strength and sensuality. From a rich but disciplined palette of materials, he creates a signature minimalism that is simple, handsome, and eminently comfortable. In Learning to See, Wolf shares the secrets of his alchemy, insights into a design process that he says starts with taking his traveler's eye into every environment. If you, like he, can simply transfer the special excitement and intense sensations you feel when you are in nature or when you first encounter something exotic to the way you want to feel on entering a room for the first time, you can learn to see. With incisive text and more than one hundred sixty photographs, Wolf walks you through this process. While providing step-by-step instructions on such practical matters as how to create floor plans, treat windows, arrange furniture, hang pictures, use flowers and mirrors and other accents, he helps instill confidence to trust your own aesthetic inspiration.

Joseph Urban ReviewJohn Loring did a superb job in informing the reader of the style and significance of Joseph Urban. A wonderful bookJoseph Urban OverviewJoseph Urban is a lavish celebration of this prolific artist, architect, and designer, whose accomplishments include magnificent Art Deco buildings, spectacular Ziegfeld Follies productions, and dramatic sets for the Metropolitan Opera. Joseph Urban (1872–1933) began his career as an architect and artist in Vienna before moving to America in 1911. In 1914 he moved to New York, where he ultimately signed on as set designer of the Metropolitan Opera. He also became immersed in an astonishing array of outside projects, designing nightclubs, hotel lounges, skyscrapers, theaters, stage and film sets, and even children's books. Though his creative output was immense, little remains of his work except the Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, and the New School and the base of the Hearst Tower in New York. Praise for Joseph Urban:"a trove of his luminous renderings and photos" --Elle Décor

The New Eighteenth-Century Style: Rediscovering a French Decor ReviewThis is a pretty, pretty book with lots of great stuff to look it, lots of interesting vignettes. It's French shabby, chippy _hit, uh, I mean chic. This was a great trend in the mid 1990's here in the USA before Rachel A. made shabby and chic a brand. Big style on a budget using detrius no one wanted. And it was cheap back then. Just took a can of white paint to chic up everything.
These French 18th century and 18th century inspired objets in this book, are not cheap. They are shabby and they are beautiful. The vignettes look like the Broadway stage set for the play Dangerous Liasons - decay, messy, artful, romantic, monochromatic and mad.
Like many decor books, the vignettes are impossible to see as life like - like does anyone really live in these vignettes. Still, they are beautiful to look at. The new 18th century style is a little like the new emperor's clothes. Smoke and mirrors to the highest degree of accomplishment. Get this book for the fun of it.The New Eighteenth-Century Style: Rediscovering a French Decor OverviewWhoever said "Everything old is new again" could have been talking about French Pompadour Style. The flamboyant, opulent, refined aesthetic—so characteristic of the eighteenth century—has enjoyed a spectacular revival in recent years. In The New Eighteenth-Century Style, journalist Michèle Lalande and photographer Gilles Trillard, both experts in the field of interior décor, survey 30 examples of this quintessential blending of exquisite detail and ostentatious affluence. From lush velvet upholstery to the emblematic use of turquoise with gold accents, these perfectly captured interiors beguile the reader with well-worn extravagance. In an era of "shabby chic" the more refined, more pristine accents of Pompadour may be just what the world of interior décor needs—and this beautiful book provides an indispensable guide.
