Allegra Hicks: An Eye for Design ReviewI have to admit I was drawn to this book because of the cover. It was just so darn pretty. I tend to be drawn to geometric prints in home, art and fashion. This book definitely has it's share of geometry, but what I actually enjoyed best were the snippets she wrote on her design process. Allegra considered such topics as memory, gardens, complementaries, texture, multiplicity, water, India, contrast, composition, energy and eclecticism while creating her designs. It was rather inspirational to read about her process and now I plan on exploring these topics myself through photography. I'm going to use these topics as springboards for my own designs. After being an avid reader of the selby blog i was reluctant whether to purchase the book or not after having seem most of the photos. i must say, its beautifully presented with clear and colourful images and very inspiring. J.C. Leyendecker ReviewLike many other reviewers, I have been waiting for a book like this for years. And, like them, I am both thrilled and disappointed. While this is one of the most comprehensive collections of Leyendecker illustrations ever to see print, and worth the price of the book alone, the text is severely wanting. The book is full of errors, both minor and major, and has an antagonistic tone to boot.
An example of the former is the claim that the actor Neil Hamilton, "appeared AS `Tarzan the Ape Man' (1934)." This, of course, should read that he appeared IN "Tarzan the Ape Man" (1932). ("Tarzan and His Mate," in which Hamilton also appeared, again not as Tarzan, was released in `34).
Examples of the later would be any mention of other illustrators, about whom they usually have some snarky comment to make. A particular amount of vitriol is spewed on to Norman Rockwell, whom they portray as the most contemptible of human beings.
This is frankly a disturbing trend in a lot of books. (witness the James Bama book "American Realist" and "Excess- the art of Michael Golden" for other examples) It seems that it is no longer enough to present an artist works and plead his case, but one must also denigrate and dismiss that artist contemporaries and rivals. If one wishes to bash artist such as Cole Phillips and Rockwell, and Leyendecker's brother and sister too boot, there are plenty of other places to do so. Is it really necessary to do such in a Leyendecker biography?
Also be aware that the authors lay much of the 20th centuries iconography at Leyendecker's feet. They exaggeratingly claim that J.C. is responsible for everything from giving flowers to mom on mother day, playing football on Thanksgiving, inspiring the novel "the Great Gatsby," and much more. It's one thing to laud your heroes accomplishments, quite another to exaggerate them.
By all means, buy the book. But do so for the pretty pictures, not the text.J.C. Leyendecker OverviewOne of the most prolific and successful artists of the Golden Age of American Illustration, J. C. The New Eighteenth-Century Style: Rediscovering a French Decor ReviewThis is a pretty, pretty book with lots of great stuff to look it, lots of interesting vignettes. It's French shabby, chippy _hit, uh, I mean chic. This was a great trend in the mid 1990's here in the USA before Rachel A. made shabby and chic a brand. Big style on a budget using detrius no one wanted. And it was cheap back then. Just took a can of white paint to chic up everything.
These French 18th century and 18th century inspired objets in this book, are not cheap. They are shabby and they are beautiful. The vignettes look like the Broadway stage set for the play Dangerous Liasons - decay, messy, artful, romantic, monochromatic and mad.
Like many decor books, the vignettes are impossible to see as life like - like does anyone really live in these vignettes. Still, they are beautiful to look at. The new 18th century style is a little like the new emperor's clothes. Smoke and mirrors to the highest degree of accomplishment.
