Milet Picture Dictionary: English-Arabic ReviewWe had the smaller milet books, and for our daughter's birthday she received this book in both of our native languages (Polish and Arabic).
Just like with the small milet book; Dad sits on one side, and I sit on the other side. Our daughter would point out to a picture and he says the Polish word, then I say the Arabic word. With time, this book helped our daughter associate the picture to the word in both languages; associate each language to each parent and later she would read it with either one of us and fill in the words in the language of the missing parent. Children of the Gilded Era: Portraits of Sargent, Renoir, Cassatt and Their Contemporaries ReviewAs many know, American painter John Singer Sargent (1856 - 1925) was not only a gifted landscape artist but was also recognized as the outstanding society portraitist of his day. One often thinks of him in connection with his painting of Madame X and the scandal that ensued. However, we are reminded of a much different Sargent when we view his portraits of children, so innocent, so appealing.
Sargent, of course, is not the only artist noted for his children's portraits. James McNeill Whistler rendered a stunning full length portrait of Miss Cicely Alexander, the daughter of a London banker and art collector. Renoir left to the world warm canvases depicting his family, Thomas Eakins immortalized children at play, and Joshua Reynolds portrayed an angelic child with "A Little Girl.."
These artists and more are represented in "Children of the Gilded Era: Portraits by Sargent, Renoir, Cassatt, and their Contemporaries" by Barbara Gallati, well known lecturer and Curator of American Art at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
More than a collection of memorable paintings of children this lovely volume represents how children were seen at the end of the 19th century. At that time, one's place in society was often undergirded by commissioned portraits. Thus, the children were seen not only through the artists' eyes but as the family wished them to be regarded and seen.
With 80 illustrations, each accompanied by a brief sketch, and seven succinct essays the reader is offered pictorial and narrative insight into how yesterday's society viewed children.

How to Raise a Dinosaur ReviewI got a copy of this from the publisher and thought it was an amusing concept. It reminds me of the fairytopia and other similar books with flaps and such to look under to get more information.
My kids got a kick out of seeing dinosaurs doing things dogs usually do, and it amused me to see the random bites out of the pages (which I don't think my kids have noticed yet).

The Cat in the Hat Comes Back (Beginner Books(R)) ReviewDr. Seuss's "The Cat in the Hat" is one of the great classics of children's literature. I'm sure that a less daring author would have left well enough alone. But the good Dr. Seuss had the nerve to write a sequel! And, I'm happy to say, "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back" matches the subversive lunacy and imaginative wit of the Cat's first adventure.
The story begins with our narrator, the same little boy from the original "Cat," shoveling snow with his sister Sally. And, as in the first book, the Cat in the Hat arrives to turn their dull day topsy-turvy.
But this is no retread of the first book. The wily Cat has some new tricks to share, and some new friends to introduce to us. Little Cat A, Little Cat B, and the rest--including some brilliant surprises--are wonderful additions to the "Cat" mythos.
As in the original, the book has some unsettling nuances. Why are these kids home alone? Just what is that bizarre pink substance in the bathtub? But leave it to the psychologists and literary critics to debate the possible hidden meanings of the book; kids will enjoy the delightful rhymes and wacky illustrations. Mei Mei Little Sister: Portraits from a Chinese Orphanage ReviewIf you have a child from China, if you are interested in China, or if you just love good photography, this book is for you. What I liked best about it is that it captures, in black and white, the expressions of all sorts of children at SWIs-young girls and boys, children with medical issues, older children. And the expressions are so poignant-giggling, crying, looking scared (many), looking solemn,looking impish or happily playing dress up. If you ever need a boost during the long and sometimes frustrating adoption process or are questioning just why you are adopting, just thumb through the pages and look into the eyes of these lovely children. Kudos to photographer Richard Bowen and the Half the Sky Foundation for this terrific and important addition.
Mei Mei Little Sister: Portraits from a Chinese Orphanage OverviewThe Chinese believe an unseen red thread joins those in this life who are destined to connect. For photographer Richard Bowen, that thread led him to China's state-run welfare institutions, where there are thousands of children, primarily girls, growing up without families to take care of them. Milet Picture Dictionary: English-Chinese ReviewMilet Picture Dictionary does not have pinyin or grammar instruction and comes in Traditional Chinese characters (a plus for me since I teach using Traditional). The pictures and the items featured in them are bright, colorful, large and easily decipherable. There is a certain amount of charm with the pastel style, abstract page design that makes up Milet. Topics in here are pretty basic for these beginner style picture dictionaries: zoo animals, body parts, furniture, food, colors, numbers, etc.
If you're a parent that reads and speaks Mandarin or Cantonese and wants to read a picture reference book to your child, Milet is just a good a choice than Usbourne's 1000 First Words in Chinese. In fact, I can argue Milet is a bit better since the pictures are a lot larger and more simple compared to Stephen Cartwright's Where's Waldo style drawings. Don't get me wrong, I love Stephen Cartwright and Usbourne's 1000 words/100 words series, but if I had a young child or toddler, Milet would be easier on their eyes and not as overwhelming with content.
If you're learning Chinese as a second language, then the lack of pinyin may frustrate you but definitely give this book a chance if you're at a late beginner, early intermediate stage. You'll have to work a harder to memorize and recognize characters in the book, but you have to just accept that not all Chinese text are accompanied with pinyin and you will one day have to learn to walk without it. Yes, it can be frustrating but look at Milet not as a "easy to use" reference guide and more of a text you have to memorize and read off the page. The Featherless Chicken ReviewI bought this book on a whim because the illustrations were so beautiful, and I liked the artistic nature of the book itself (nice thick quality pages, unique font style, wonderful artwork). It turned out to be a funny story that my 6 year old daughter adores. She immediatly sympathized with the main character, the featherless chicken, who is excluded by the more beautiful feathered birds. But, in the end, following series of funny events, the beautiful birds end up exposed and naked in the elements, just like the featherless bird. I think this book sends a good message--we are all the same underneath, those who act uppity may one day find themselves stripped of their false sense of superiority, so be connected and open to others no matter what.The Featherless Chicken OverviewFilled with bold illustrations and wry humor, this twist on the ugly duckling tale places a chicken in the lead role. The chicken has no feathers and he longs to play with the other beautiful chickens in the yard, but they turn him down, ridiculing him for his bare skin. When he discovers a creative camouflage for his paltry plumage, however, the other chickens allow him to join them on a boat ride, never expecting that a surprising accident will change the way they see themselves and the (formerly) featherless chicken.

Oscar and the Mooncats ReviewMy 3 and 1/2 year old grandson has asked for this book to be read every night except one since it arrived. He has also taken it to Show and Tell at preschool. He identifies with the boy and loves the adventure of the cat. I think he is reassured by the ending.
Well written and love the illustrations.Not at all hard for an adult to read repeatedly.Oscar and the Mooncats OverviewOscar the cat loves his boy. He also loves to climb way up where he can see everything.He jumps onto the fridge, onto the bookshelf, and onto the roof of the garage, but if he jumps just a little bit higher, his view would be out of this world. With the mightiest leap of his life, Oscar makes it all the way to the moon. Oscar makes some new friends there.

Two-Minute Bedtime Stories (Two-Minute Stories) ReviewI received this book yesterday and read it too my 6 year old grandson, these are stories that even I have never heard and they are so cute. They leave you in amazement at how they come out. Each story is an unique tale about something that can out smart the other, just right for my little grandson, as he is read too every day by one of his parents.
The book is so pretty and colorful and each page you can just look and look at it. Too me as a great-grandparent I even love the pictures. The stories that are included are:

Rachel and her brother begin to argue and tear their Grandma's special pillow, and the feathers fly everywhere. Grandma is upset as they try to get all the feathers as they blow through the air. The children wonder why the pillow is so special to her. Old Pig ReviewI think this must be the best book I have read to help the youngest members of your family deal with death. It is an incredibly positive and loving book.
Young pig and old pig live together, young pig is old pig's grand-daughter. They do their chores together each of them doing something different - constructive and sharing. Until one day Old Pig can't get out of bed.
Later they go for a walk. Old Pig knows she isn't long for the world and wants to look one last time at the beauty of things - the light on the water, the leaves on the trees. Then they go home. Young pig HOlds her tight for the last time.
It is a very beautiful and positive book. The illustrations are very sweet too.Old Pig Overview
