The Classic Treasury of Aesop's Fables ReviewIt is true - the drawings in this book are beautiful. However, I was hoping that the telling of the fables would have more of the original flavor. The stories have been updated to at least the 20th century. I am sure that when Aesop told the stories, the Country Mouse and the City Mouse didn't have to dodge automobiles and miss stepping in bubblegum. It was misleading that Aesop is listed as "editor" because the stories are not as he told them.
The overall messages (ie morals) are there. I just was disappointed that it was so updated. The Cat in the Hat Comes Back (Beginner Books(R)) ReviewDr. Seuss's "The Cat in the Hat" is one of the great classics of children's literature. I'm sure that a less daring author would have left well enough alone. But the good Dr. Seuss had the nerve to write a sequel! And, I'm happy to say, "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back" matches the subversive lunacy and imaginative wit of the Cat's first adventure.
The story begins with our narrator, the same little boy from the original "Cat," shoveling snow with his sister Sally. And, as in the first book, the Cat in the Hat arrives to turn their dull day topsy-turvy.
But this is no retread of the first book. The wily Cat has some new tricks to share, and some new friends to introduce to us. Little Cat A, Little Cat B, and the rest--including some brilliant surprises--are wonderful additions to the "Cat" mythos.
As in the original, the book has some unsettling nuances. Why are these kids home alone? Just what is that bizarre pink substance in the bathtub? But leave it to the psychologists and literary critics to debate the possible hidden meanings of the book; kids will enjoy the delightful rhymes and wacky illustrations. Good Faeries Bad Faeries ReviewThis is a beautiful and informative book of faery lore. Everyone who loves myths, legends, and magic, should click their Mouse and buy it here immediately, you won't be sorry. As a great admirer of Froud's superlative art I was still stunned by just How Good this book is. The man is a modern Master of faery painting. His name will go down in History alongside 19th century Masters like Rackham, Dadd, Doyle and Dulac. Fans of myth and magic will be pleased to note that the legendary Terri Windling also had a hand in this book. The text has some of the same flavor as her folklore columns in Realms of Fantasy magazine, which someone ought to collect and publish someday. The Froud-Windling connection became apparent when Froud and his faeries showed up as characters in her magical novel "The Wood Wife" and it's thrilling to see these two myth-masters teaming up again. Windling's fans will want to pick up this book and all of Brian Froud's work while Froud's faery fans will be enchanted with "The Wood Wife". The book jacket says they both live in the same town in England. There must be something magical in the water there! Thank you Mr. Froud and Ms. Windling for keeping the Myth Alive in our technology-obsessed world.Good Faeries Bad Faeries Overview
